Most people assume that mini storage is any form of storage where they stack boxes, some of their old garments, maybe a chair which is disintegrated but they assure themselves that they will salvage it at some point. Needless to say. But, when you talk to some of the frequent users, or, indeed, when you use it yourself, you start to see that people are putting a lot more interesting stuff in it than one would imagine. Inventory in commercial affairs, e.g. One of my friends has a small online store and she stores all her wrapping materials and spare items as well as a label printer in her apartment. Her apartment had been a warehouse. It no longer is so. She visits the unit like it was a small logistics center, which is melodramatic, but it works.
Then there is hobby equipment. Not the accidental kind. I mean full-blown equipment that is in your house. Surf boards, camping equipment, a full-scale DJ setup. The reason that one of the men I met maintains his turntables and speakers in the same place is that his flatmates had expressed their dissatisfaction with the noise and the space that they consumed. Fair enough.
It is understandable that people take things too far, but seasonal stuff. Not only winter jackets. They do have store holiday decorations, fake Christmas trees, some red packets and other supplies that they actually touch only once a year. It sets cupboards free in a seemingly unfocused way.
Something that I did not expect? Documents. Not boring documents that can be moved quickly by scanning them but physical copies that no one would want to take a chance of disposing. Corporate records, design manuals, even home work. It is a strange consolation to have them there and not at home.
The other one, though with a twist is furniture. It does not always need to be an unwanted piece of furniture. At some point, there are good stuff, which people wish to use in future. One of the couples I interviewed had a dining table in their waiting room until they can move out to a bigger place. It was not because they did not wish to sell it and regret it later. So there is the waiting table.
More often than you think musical instruments do come. Pianos are pain, but guitar, drum kits, keyboards, they are not uncommon. Especially the people who continue to play, although not on a daily basis. It does not make the living room a studio.
Then there are memory boxes except that they are no longer boxes. Whole collections. The child toys, travel souvenirs, letters, junks, that cannot be used, and are hard to get rid of. One of the users told me that I would not need to see them on the daily basis, but I would not want to lose them. That stuck.
One that is slightly surprising one- sports equipment amongst children. Parents retain the bikes, scooters or even old uniforms that they can reuse or inherit by their children. It rotates in and out over the years. House saving, but the machine can be filled with memories of adult years.
The mini storage units are not about space, but decisions. What you hold in hand, what you lay up, what you are yet quite unprepared to surrender. and there are times when that line runs farther than they believe.
